The Rhodes Scholarship is, by its own description, the oldest international scholarship programme in the world — and since 2019, it has run a dedicated constituency for candidates from West Africa, Nigeria included, rather than leaving the region to compete through a single global pool.
What it funds. Every Rhodes Scholarship funds postgraduate study at the University of Oxford in full: course fees, an annual stipend (£20,400 for the 2025–26 year, per Rhodes House's own published figure), Oxford's application fee, visa and health-surcharge costs, two economy flights, and a settling-in allowance.
What Rhodes House is actually looking for. Academic strength is the entry point, not the whole picture — Rhodes House describes the scholarship as building "public-spirited leaders," and selection weighs leadership, service and character alongside your degree.
