The Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarship's First Deadline Is 2 October 2026 — and It's Not the Last One

Some scholarship deadlines are a single date. This one is three, and missing the earliest closes the door on the other two before they're even relevant.

The three-step process, confirmed directly against the Foundation's own 2027 application page:

1. Eligibility screening form — 2 October 2026. This is the real deadline for a new applicant. Miss it, and there's no later stage to enter.
2. References — 30 October 2026, 9:00am ET.
3. Complete application — 6 November 2026, 4:00pm ET.

Who it's for. Doctoral students in the first or second year of a PhD program, enrolled at a Canadian university — nationality itself isn't restricted, so a Nigerian PhD student already studying in Canada is eligible on the same terms as anyone else.

What it's worth. Up to $50,000 a year for three years toward tuition and living costs, plus up to $20,000 a year for research and travel — among the more generous doctoral awards we track.

If you're early enough in a Canadian PhD program to still qualify, the screening form on 2 October is the only date that matters this week. Everything else follows from clearing that gate.
